JOHN DOWLING
Serious Profit Breakthrough for the Service Department
John is a United States Marine veteran who has a 25-year career in the product support industry. He began his career as an equipment mechanic and then worked as a field service mechanic. Over time, John was promoted to service manager and ultimately became the branch manager of a heavy equipment dealership. He later accepted a position as a field service representative with CNHI. In his final role before transitioning to the recruiting and consulting industries, John served as the director of product support at a heavy equipment dealership with 10 locations. Today, he is the author of “Service by the Boxes,” a highly rated book on Amazon with a 5-star rating.
John will talk about:
- His “Service by the Box” methodology: The service process is complex but can be simplified or broken down into as few as 10 stages or steps, which he refers to as boxes.
- It doesn’t matter how well the service department repairs the customer’s piece of equipment or how timely they do it; until the paperwork is finished, the billing is completed, the work order is invoiced, and cash is collected, everything is for naught ... until money is received from the customer.
- He will also explain:
- The reasons for the delay in invoicing the customer once the work order has been completed
- How a prolonged billing cycle adversely impacts the dealerships’ profitability and cash flow
- The differences between the order-to-invoice cycle and the invoice-to-cash cycle that every business must complete to operate effectively, along with identifying the factors that contribute to prolonged cycles.
- Actionable items and key takeaways that can be implemented at the dealership tomorrow to significantly reduce the time required to invoice and collect payments from customers.
- And very important … Who is responsible for ensuring the service department has an efficient and effective billing process.

You’re Going to Love This Course
Lions Municipal Golf Course has long been one of the city’s most popular courses. In 1924, the Lions Club opened Lions Municipal, the first public golf course in the city. The group leased part of the University of Texas Brackenridge tract and converted the property into a nine-hole facility. The course was later expanded to 18 holes. The course retained the name “Lions Municipal” or “Muny” after the transfer of the lease to the city in 1936.
Lions has hosted many notable golfers, including Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Sandra Haynie, Tom Kite, and Ben Crenshaw. Lions also hosts Texas’ oldest amateur tournament, the Firecracker Open.
Lions was selected by the Texas Golf Hall of Fame and added to the Texas Registry of Historic Golf Courses. Lions is also listed on the Registration of National Historical Places by the National Park Service. The course is recognized as one of the first courses in the South to desegregate prior to the Supreme Court decision in Brown V. Board of Education in 1954.
While “Muny” has changed over the years, it remains a quality test to Austin’s most loyal golf patrons.
